Southern Oregon Printmaking Association
Southern Oregon Printmaking Association was founded in 2004 by
Julie VandenBerg. It is located in the Railroad District in the
Historic H.G. Enders building, back entrance across from the A
St. Marketplace. SOPA is a nonprofit studio, school and gallery.
It is our goal to promote the print arts by hosting educational
shows and events, teaching classes to people of all ages and skill
levels, and interacting with community members. SOPA is one of
only a handful of nontoxic studios in the nation, making printmaking
safe and accessible to all people, in addition to minimizing ecological
impact. Our board members include Tracy Templeton, John Davis,
and Kathleen Stewart. We currently offer kids summer classes
and regular adult classes.
SOPA is currently showing a retrospective of Betty La Dukes
etchings. Betty La Duke is an activist, teacher and artist, who
devotes much of her time supporting the organization, Heiffer
International. This is an unusual show because it represents Bettys
prints over a span of twenty or so years---and also because she
no longer makes prints. As a special opportunity, Betty La Duke
will be giving a presentation of her artwork and travels during
the July 12th Art Salon at Nuwandart, 7pm: 258 A St. Suite 2.
The presentation will begin at Nuwandart and then we will walk
down the street to SOPA to view her etchings.
Gallerie Karon
Entering
its 5th year, Gallerie Karon presents two stunning shows this
summer. Opening July 7th is Husbands, Wives, and Lovers,
showcasing the creations of artistic couples. This exhibition
features artwork, crafts, music, poetry, and antiques displayed
in a romantic setting (see the descriptive article in Ashland
Magazine, Summer 2006).
On August 4th, the gallery premieres a body of all-new work by
local photographer Todd Davis. These images highlight Todds
love of nature through the lush colors and bold compositions that
define his signature style.

Frank Philipps Pottery
Frank
Philipps Pottery showcases the decorative and functional pottery
of Ashland potter, Frank Philipps. In addition, you will find
pieces by quality craftsmen creating in glass, ceramics, and metal,
and a changing display of fine art. This months featured
artist is painter, Barbara Cecil. Barbaras oils reflect
her desire to express a gentle, yet powerful spirit of life through
color and light. I am inspired by anything that does justice
to lifes inherent beauty. Her style is influenced
by her grandmother who worked and painted in Paris as an Impressionist.
What she loves most is the creative process. I wait for
the moment when the painting itself describes whats next
and I follow it. Barbara and Frank will be on hand during
First Friday.
