ABOUT THE ARTIST

Applegate Galleries is the home gallery of master sculptor Ron Bertocchi. His 33 year background as a sculptor began during his college days at OSU, where he studied Biology and took art classes as electives. Art proved more compelling than science for him, and he soon turned his love of wildlife and sculpture into a career as a metal artist. In 1993, after 20 years as a self-proclaimed "street artist," Ron Bertocchi settled into a small studio in Ashland, employing a team of three people. Increasing demand for Bertocchi's designs resulted in a move to a new building in October of 1998, where he currently employs a staff of nine.

ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Solid copper is the primary material, with accents crafted of bronze and brass. Our furniture line also employs durable steel which reinforces the frames. Copper is a "warm metal" that is very malleable, allowing Bertocchi and his team to create curves and rounded effects that add depth to his designs. The metal figures are formed using oxy-acetylene torches, then hammered and scored by hand. Colors are all-natural. The blue-green copper is achieved by oxidization using copper nitrate. Heat and immersion into water and borax obtains the range of other colors, including the brilliant reds, iridescent blues, and natural browns. All sculptures are finished with a clear acrylic to enhance their shine and protect the metals.

Bertocchi has an extensive line of over 100 product designs, including tabletop bases, wall sculptures, casual furniture, mirrors, wall sconces, garden stakes, and lamp designs.
