Contemporary Animation and Comic Book Art

Schneider Museum of Art, Southern Oregon University

October 5-December 15, 2001

The Schneider Museum of Art is excited to announce an exhibition of contemporary animation and comic book artists that opens on October 5, 2001. Curated by animator and Southern Oregon University Professor, Miles Inada, the exhibition will showcase artists working independently in mass media to create challenging art that reaches outside the traditional confines of the art world. This will be a unique museum exhibition exploring an emerging area of the visual arts that has had little critical attention. Selected artists include, Lynda Barry, Peter Bagge, James Duesing, Paul Glabicki, Ellie Lee and Jim Woodring. The exhibition will feature original drawings, working sketches, printed work, video and material created for the internet.

Animation and comic books have traditionally been controlled by large media corporations which turn out an assembly line product aimed at making millions of dollars and selling to the widest possible audience. The result has been that most of the people in our culture, though intimately familiar with the forms and conventions of these two media, have never seen them used to challenge or explore, but rather to sell copy or simply to amuse. We anticipate this show will introduce the museum's audience to exciting and challenging new approaches to these popular media.

An illustrated on-line exhibition catalogue featuring a selection of new essays on animation and comic book art along with biographical material on the artists will be available beginning September 24, at www.sou.edu/art/anicomic.

The Schneider Museum of Art is located on the Southern Oregon University campus on the corner of Siskiyou Blvd. and Indiana Street. For more information call 541-552-6245 or visit our website at www.sou.edu/sma
